Bundey Data Centre

IREN will work with local governments and communities, hire local staff and contract with local businesses where possible, providing training and upskilling opportunities, and investing $250,000 each year through our Community Grants Program. The proposed project will create more than 500 jobs during construction and more than 200 ongoing operational jobs, which are expected to be mostly based on site. 

As businesses, governments, community services, industry research and development and the public use more data and digital services than ever before, local data centres are increasingly important to support our economy and everyday lives.

IREN will fund all connection infrastructure, and we expect no additional network costs to power the 800MW load. We will also make substantial Transmission Use of System (TUOS) payments, which will help reduce transmission costs for South Australian households and businesses.

On-site backup power generation is included in the project design. In the event of an energy grid emergency our Bundey campus can go offline, to prioritise the power needs of critical local services and households.

The project site is on private land. Of the approximately 1,300-acre site, only around 15% will be used for the data hall buildings, with the rest used for ancillary buildings, laydown areas, roads and environmental buffers.

IREN designs its facilities with modern cooling technology to minimise water use. Our Bundey campus will not consume water for cooling on an ongoing basis. Unlike evaporative cooling systems used by some data centre providers, our cooling system reuses water in a closed loop. Think of it like a car radiator – another closed system that reuses water for cooling.

The project will be built out progressively, during which approximately 3 megalitres of water (roughly 1 Olympic-sized swimming pool) will be required every 6 months until the initial fill for our closed-loop system is complete. After the initial fill, less than 1% of our cooling system capacity will be topped up during operations.

The Bundey data centre is located approximately 5km from the nearest residence, such that its noise and visual impacts will be minimised.
